YUDDHAKAANDA – SARGA 2

Rama is immersed in grief. Sugriva comforts Rama to be courageous.

Commentary:

The glorious Sugreeva made the following reply, which was intended to expel his grief, to Rama the son of Dasaratha who felt miserable with anguish. “Oh, hero! Why are you lamenting thus, as any other ordinary man? Do not be sorrowful like this. Abandon your grief, as an ungrateful man abandons friendship. As the information about Seetha has since been gathered, I do not indeed see any scope for your grief Oh, Rama! Oh, Rama! You are a wise person, a knower of sacred works, an intellectual and a learned man. Give up these ordinary apprehensions like a man whose spirit is disciplined gives up ideas which spoil the purpose. We shall make our way up to Lanka, by crossing the ocean filled with large crocodiles. We shall destroy your enemy. All actions get dissipated by a person who is non-enthusiastic, depressed and disturbed with grief. Such a person gets into troubles too. These leaders of monkey squads are gallant and efficient in all ways. They are enthusiastic even to enter a fire for your sake. I understand this from their joy and my reasoning too is sound. You ought to act in every way that I may be able to get back Seetha after destroying, by an attack, Ravana the enemy of sinful deeds. You take steps in such a way that a bridge is constructed across the sea and we reach that city of the king of ogres. Be certain that Ravana is killed, once he is seen in a battle and on our seeing that city of Lanka standing on a peak of the Trikuta Mountain. Without building a bridge across the sea the dreadful abode of Varuna (the god of water), Lanka cannot be defeated even by gods and demons including Indra. Know that when the whole of my army crosses the sea as a bridge is built across it, they will come out victorious, because these monkeys who are able to change their form at will are indeed valiant in battle. Therefore, take away your apprehensive mind, which destroys any enterprise for grief in this world diminishes the might of a man, Oh king! Cling to the practice of boldness, ought to be resorted to by a man. It will produce competence without doubt to the doer quickly. Prevail upon the strength with alertness at this moment, Oh highly intelligent prince! Grief for something lost or destroyed consumes all resources of even the strong and magnanimous men like you. You are the foremost among the intelligent and the knower of all sacred texts. Hence, you ought to defeat the enemy, with allies like me. I do not indeed see any one who can withstand you in a battle filed in the three worlds, when you are armed with a bow, Oh Rama! Your work duly entrusted to the monkeys will not be spoiled. You shall behold Seetha ere long by crossing theimperishable sea. Oh, Lord of the earth! Desist from this melancholy. Yield to your legitimate indignation. Unadventurous Kshatriyas (members of warrior-tribe) never win honor but all fear the wrathful. You with your resourceful mind, along with us together, ponder over now a design to cross the sea, the terrible Lord of rivers. Know victory to be certain, once the sea has been crossed by the army. Verily when all my forces have passed over the sea our triumph is assured! These monkeys, the courageous soldiers who are able to change their form at their volition, will crush their opponents with an avalanche of rocks and trees. Once we have crossed the sea (the abode of Varuna) by whatever the means employed, Ravana is as definitely killed in my eyes, Oh exterminator of enemies! What is the use of all these words? By all means, you will be a victorious man. I see good omens and my heart is over- thrilled with joy.”

तंतुशोकपरिद्यूनंरामंदशरथात्मजम्‌।
उवाचवचनंश्रीमान्‌ सुग्रीवश्शोकनाशनम्‌ ।। 6.2.1।।

श्रीमान्‌: glorious,
सुग्रीवः Sugriva,
शोकपरिद्यूनम्‌: one who is filled with sorrow,
दशरथात्मजम्‌: Dasaratha’s son,
तम्‌: him,
रामम्‌: at Rama,
शोकनाशनम्‌: to remove the agony,
वचनम्‌: words of advice,
उवाच: spoke.

Glorious Sugriva spoke such words of advice to remove the agony of Rama,son of Dasaratha, who was filled with sorrow.

किंत्वंसन्तप्यसेवीर ! यथान्यःप्राकृतस्तथा।
मैवंभूस्त्यजसन्तापंकृतघ्नइवसौहृदम्‌ ।। 6.2.2।।

वीर: heroic,
अन्यः like others,
प्राकृतः common man,
यथा: likewise,
तथा: that way,
त्वया: by you,
किम्‌: why,
तप्यते: give up grief,
एवम्‌: that way,
माभूः do not be,
एवम: like this,
कृतघ्नः ungrateful one,
इव: like that,
सन्तापम्‌: grief,
त्यज: give up
सौहृदम्‌: friendship.

“Heroic Rama! Why are you grieving like a common man? Give up your grief just like an ungrateful one gives up friendship.”

सन्तापस्यचतेस्थानंनहिपश्यामिराघव!
प्रवृत्तावुपलब्धायांज्ञातेचनिलयेरिपोः।। 6.2.3।।

राघव: Raghava,
प्रवृत्तौ: information,
उपलब्धायाम्‌: having secured,
ज्ञाते: knowing,
चनिलयेरिपोः and the enemy’s residence,
सन्तापस्य: mourning,
स्थानम्‌: location,
नपश्यामिहि: I do not see the reason.

“Raghava!Having secured the information (of Sita) and known the location of the enemy’s residence,I do not see the reason for your mourning.”

मतिमान्शास्त्रवित्प्राज्ञःपण्डितश्चासिराघव!।
त्यजेमांपापिकांबुद्धिंकृतात्मेवार्थदूषणीम्‌ ।। 6.2.4।।

राघव: Raghava,
मतिमान्‌: an intellectual,
शास्त्रवित्‌: one who is well versed in Sastras,
प्राज्ञः one who is wise,
पण्डितश्चअसि: and who is learned also,
कृतात्मा: one who is efficient,
अर्थदूषणीम्‌: one who is a violator of subtle truth,
बुद्धिम्‌: intellect,
इमाम्‌: these,
पापिकाम्‌: sinful,
त्यज: give up.

“Raghava! You are an intellectual, well versed in Sastras, wise and learned. Give up this sinful thought just as the one who is efficient gives up the one who violates subtle truth.”

समुद्रंलङ्घयित्वातुमहानक्रसमाकुलम्‌ ।
लङ्कामारोहयिष्यामोहनिष्यामश्चतेरिपुम्‌ ।। 6.2.5।।

महानक्रसमाकुलम्‌: that which is infested with huge crocodiles,
समुद्रम्‌: ocean,
लङ्घयित्वा: if we cross over,
लङ्काम्‌: Lanka,
आरोहयिष्याम: ascending the fortress,
ते: your,
रिपुम्‌: enemy,
हनिष्यामश्च: know that he is killed.

“If we cross over that ocean infested with huge crocodiles and ascend the fortress of Lanka,know that the enemy is killed.”

निरुत्साहस्यदीनस्यशोकपर्याकुलात्मनः।
सर्वार्थाव्यवसीदन्तिव्यसनंचाधिगच्छति।। 6.2.6।।

निरुत्साहस्य: one who is despondent,
दीनस्य: for a dejected person,
शोकपर्याकुलात्मनः overwhelmed with grief,
सर्वार्थाः in all matters,
व्यवसीदन्ति: dispirited,
व्यसनंच: and worry,
अधिगच्छति: will be destroyed.

“One who is despondent, dejected and overwhelmed with grief, will be dispirited in all matters. Not only that with worry he will meet with disaster.”

इमेशूरास्समर्थाश्चसर्वनोहरियूथपाः

त्वत्प्रियार्थंकृतोत्साहाःप्रवेष्टुमपिपावकम्‌ ।
एषांहर्षेणजानामितर्कश्चास्मिन्‌ दृढोमम।। 6.2.7।।

सर्वतः all these,
इमे: to you,
हरियूथपाः vanara leaders,
शूराः heroes,
समर्थाश्च: highly capable,
त्वत्प्रियार्थम्‌ : for your happiness,
पावकम्‌: fire,
प्रवेष्टुम्‌: to enter
अपि: also,
कृतोत्साहः are ready,
एषाम्‌: these,
हर्षेण: joy,
जानामि: I know,
मम: me,
तर्कश्चापि: even infer,
दृढः I am certain.

“All these vanara leaders and heroes are highly capable and for your happiness they are even ready to enter fire. I know this from their joy and I even infer that it is certain (to happen).”

विक्रमेणसमानेष्येसीतांहत्वायथारिपुम्‌।
रावणंपापकर्माणंतथात्वंकर्तुमर्हसि।।6.2.8।।

रिपुम्‌: enemy,
पापकर्माणम्‌: one of sinful deeds,
रावणम्‌: Ravana,
विक्रमेण: with prowess,
हत्वा: on killing,
सीताम्‌: Sita,
यथा: that way,
समानेष्ये: bring back,
तथा: that way,
त्वम्‌: your,
कर्तुम्‌: will do,
अर्हसि: you ought to.

“You ought to work such that we would kill that enemy Ravana of sinful deeds with our prowess and get back Sita. I hope you are capable of doing that.”

सेतुरत्रयथाबध्येद्यथापश्येमतांपुरीम्‌।
तस्यराक्षसराजस्यतथात्वंकुरुराघव! ।। 6.2.9।।

राघव: Raghava,
अत्र: there,
सेतुः bridge,
यथा: in that way,
बध्येत्‌: would build,
तस्य: his,
राक्षसराजस्य: rakshasa king’s,
ताम्‌: that,
पुरीम्‌: city,
यथा:like that,
पश्येमः will see,
तथा: that way,
त्वम्‌: you,
कुरु: think.

“Ragahava!You think that we will be building a bridge and then seeing that city of the king of Rakshasas.”

दृष्टवातांतुपुरींलङ्कांत्रिकूटशिखरेस्थिताम्‌ ।
हतंचरावणंयुद्धेदर्शनावधारय।। 6.2.10।।

त्रिकूटशिखरे: on top of Trikuta mountain,
स्थिताम्‌: situated,
ताम्‌: that,
लङ्कांपुरीम्‌: city of Lanka,
दृष्टवा: after seeing,
युद्धे: in war,
तु: you,
दर्शनात्‌: on having a look,
रावणम्‌: Ravana,
हतम्‌: is killed,
अवधारय: can determine.

“If the city of Lanka situated on top of Trikuta mountain is seen, you can be sure that Ravana is killed.”

अबध्वासागरेसेतुंघोरेचतुवरुणालये।
लङ्कांनमर्दितुंशक्यासेन्द्रैरपिसुरासुरैः।। 6.2.11।।

घोरे: dreadful,
वरुणालये: abode of Varuna,
सागरे: on the ocean,
सेतुम्‌: bridge,
अबध्वा: without building,
लङ्का: Lanka,
सेन्द्रैः Indra,
सुरासुरैःअपि: even suras and asuras,
मर्दितुम्‌: to crush,
नशक्या: not possible.

“Without building a bridge on that dreadful ocean, the abode of Varuna, it is not possible for suras or asuras accompanied by Indra also to crush Lanka.”

सेतुर्बद्धस्समुद्रेचयावल्लङ्कास्समीपतः।। 6.2.12।।

सर्वंतीर्णंचमेसैन्यंजितमित्युपधारय।
इमेहिसमरेवीराहरयःकामरूपिण।। 6.2.13।।

लङ्कासमीपतः up to Lanka,
समुद्रे: on the ocean,
यावत्‌: up to,
सेतुः bridge,
बद्ध: on building,
मे: mine,
सर्वम्‌: all,
सैन्यम्‌: army,
तीर्णम्‌: crossed over,
जितम्‌ इति: like having won,
उपधारय: consider,
कामरूपिणः those who can assume any form,
इमे: these,
हरयः vanaras,
समरे: in war,
वीराः heroic.

“On building a bridge over the large ocean up to Lanka, when all my army of vanaras can cross over, you may consider that you have won. These vanaras are heroic in war and can assume any form at will.”

तदलंविक्लबांबुद्धिम्‌ राजन‌ ! सर्वार्थनाशनीम्‌।
पुरुषस्यहिलोकेऽस्मिन्‌ शोकश्शौर्यापकर्षणः।। 6.2.14।।

राजन्‌: O king!,
तत्‌: therefore,
सर्वार्थनाशनीम्‌: that which destroys everything,
विक्लबाम्‌ agitated,
बुद्धिम्‌: feeling,
अलम्‌: enough,
अस्मिन्‌: in this,
लोके: world,
पुरुषस्य: man’s,
शोकः sorrowful,
शौर्यापकर्षण: valiance is lost.

“O king, therefore enough of this agitated feeling which destroys everything. In this world the valiance of man is lost if he is sorrowful.”

यत्तुकार्यंमनुष्येणशौण्डीर्यमवलम्बता।
अस्मिन्‌ कालेमहाप्राज्ञसत्त्वमातिष्ठतेजसा ।। 6.2.15।।

मनुष्येण: by a human being,
यत्‌: just as,
शैण्डीर्यम्‌: heroism,
अवलम्बता: follows,
कार्यं: task
तु: you,
महाप्राज्ञ: very wise,
अस्मिन्‌: in this,
काले: world,
तेजसा: courage,
सत्त्वम्‌: valour,
अतिष्ट: rise up.

“Just as heroism follows a human being in this world on accomplishing a task, you who are very wise, should resort to courage and valour and rise up.”

शूराणांहिमनुष्याणांत्वद्विधानांमहात्मनाम्‌ ।
विनष्टेवाप्रणष्टेवाशोकस्सर्वार्थनाशनः।। 6.2.16।।

शूराणाम्‌: among the valiant ones,
महात्मनाम्‌: great,
त्वद्विधानाम्‌: that method,
मनुष्याणाम्‌: by human being,
विनष्टेवा: that which is destroyed,
प्रणष्टेवा: or lost,
शोकः worrying,
सर्वार्थनाशनः leads to disaster of everything.

“If you who are great among the valiant ones worry for that which is destroyed or lost, it would lead to disaster of everything.”

तत्त्वंबुद्धिमतांश्रेष्ठस्सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदः।
मद्विधैस्सचिवैस्सार्थमरिंजेतुमिहार्हसि।। 6.2.17।।

त्वम्‌: you,
बुद्धिमताम्‌: highly intelligent,
श्रेष्ठः foremost
सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदः well-versed in the meaning of all sastras,
त्वम्‌: to you,
तु: to you,
मद्विधैः like me,
सचिवैः friends
सार्थम्‌: along with,
अरिम्‌: enemy,
जेतुम्‌: conquer,
इहार्हसि: you will.

“You are highly intelligent,foremost among those who are well-versed in the meaning of all sastras. You will conquer your enemy along with friends like me.”

नहिपश्याम्यहंकंचित् त्रिषुलोकेषुराघव।
गृहीतधनुषेयस्तेतिष्ठेदभिमुखोरणे।। 6.2.18।।

राघव: Raghava,
रणे: when in war,
गृहीतधनुषः holding the bow,
ते: your,
अभिमुखो: in front,
यः who,
तिष्ठेत्‌: stood by,
कंचित्‌: indeed,
त्रिषु: in the three,
लोकेषु: worlds,
अहम्‌: I,
नपश्यामिहि: have not seen.

“O Raghava ! When you hold the bow in war, Indeed who can stand in front of you in the three worlds. I have not seen.”

वानरेषुसमासक्तंनतेकार्यंविपत्स्यते।
अचिराद्द्रक्ष्यसेसीतांतीर्त्वासागरमक्ष्यम्‌ ।। 6.2.19।।

वानरेषु: upon vanaras,
समासक्तम्‌: entrusted,
तेकार्यम्‌: this task of yours,
नविपत्स्यते: will not be spoilt,
अक्षयम्‌: that which cannot be subdued,
सागरम्‌: ocean,
तीर्त्वा: crossing over,
अचिरात्‌: very soon,
सीताम्‌: that Sita,
द्रक्ष्यसे: you will see.

“The task of yours entrusted to vanaras will never be spoiled. Very soon you will see Sita crossing over the ocean that cannot be subdued.”

तदलंशोकमालम्ब्यक्रोधमालम्बभूपते! ।
निश्चेष्टाःक्षत्रियामन्दास्सर्वेचण्डस्यबिभ्यति।। 6.2.20 ।।

भूपते: O Lord of earth!,
तत्‌: that,
शोकम्‌: pain,
आलम्ब्य: experienced,
अलम्‌: enough,
क्रोधम्‌: anger,
अलम्ब: take on to,
निश्चेष्टाः become lethargic,
क्षत्रियाः when kshatriyas,
मन्दाः dull people,
चण्डस्य: at fearful one,
सर्वे: all,
बिभ्यति: are scared.

“O Lord of earth! Enough of that pain you have experienced. Give up sorrow and take on to anger. When kshatriyas are lethargic, they become dull but all are scared at a fearful one.”

लङ्घनार्थंचघोरस्यसमुद्रस्यनदींपतेः।
सहास्माभिरिहोपेतस्सूक्ष्मबुद्धिर्विचारय।। 6.2.21।।

सूक्ष्मबुद्धिः one with subtle intellect,
इह: now,
अस्माभिःसह: along with us,
उपेतः means,
नदीपतेः lord of rivers,
घोरस्य: dreadful,
समुद्रस्य: of ocean,
लङ्घनार्थम्‌: to cross over,
विचारय: think of.

“You are endowed with subtle intellect and now think of the means to cross over this dreadful looking ocean; the lord of rivers.”

लङ्घितेतस्यतैस्सैन्यंजितमित्युपधारय।
सर्वंतीर्णंचमेसैन्यंजितमित्यवधार्यताम्‌ ।।6.2.22।।

तैः these vanaras,
सैन्यैः army,
तस्य: for them,
लङ्घिते: if they can cross,
जितमित्येव: have conquered,
मे: my,
सर्वम्‌: all,
सैन्यम्‌: army,
तीर्णम्‌: certain,
जितमिति: have succeeded,
अवधार्यताम्‌: certainly,
उपधारय: presume.

“If the vanara army can cross (the ocean) you are certain that we will conquer. Presume that the army has succeeded.”

इमेहिहरयश्शूरास्समरेकामरूपिणः।
तानरीन्विधमिष्यन्तिशिलापादपवृष्टिभिः।। 6.2.23।।

समरे: in combat,
शूराः heroes,
कामरूपिणः those who can take any form at their will,
इमेहरयः these vanaras,
शिलापादपवृष्टिभिः rain boulders and trees,
तान्‌: those,
अरीन्‌: enemies,
विधमिष्यन्तिहि: would cut them to size.

“Being heroic in combat, these vanaras can take any form at their will.They would rain boulders and trees on enemies and cut them to size.”

कथञ्चित्सन्तरिष्यामस्तेवयंवरुणालयम्‌।
हतमित्येवतंमन्येयुद्धेशत्रुनिबर्हण! ।। 6.2.24।।

शत्रुनिबर्हण: exterminator of foes,
वरुणालयम्‌: abode of Varuna the ocean,
कथञ्चित्‌: by any means,
वयम्‌: us,
सन्तरिष्याम: the enemy,
युद्दे: in combat,
तं: him(Ravana),
हतमित्येव: has been killed,
मन्ये: think

“O Exterminator of foes! By whatever means the ocean is crossed by us, think that the enemy has been killed in combat.”

किमुक्त्वाबहुधाचापिसर्वथाविजयीभवान्‌ ।
निमित्तानिचपश्यामिमनोमेसम्प्रहृष्यति।। 6.2.25।।

बहुधा: many,
उक्त्वा: speaking,
किम्‌: what use,
सर्वथा: by all means,
भवान्‌: to you,
विजयी: victory,
निमित्तानि: signs,
पश्यामि: are seen,
मे: by me,
मनः in mind,
सम्प्रहृष्यति: is highly delighted.

“Of what use is speaking many words. By all means you will be victorious. I see signs of it and feel highly delighted in my mind.”
