YUDDHAKAANDA – SARGA 9
All the demons of King Ravana present there namely Prahasta, Durmukha, Vajradamshtra, Nikumbha and Vajrahanu, eulogising their strengths, assure the king that they can individually kill Rama and his army within no time.
ततो नील अम्बुद निभः प्रहस्तो नाम राक्षसः |
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर् वाक्यम् शूरः सेना पतिस्तदा ||
ततः = thereafter;
शूरः = a valiant;
राक्षसः = demon;
प्रहस्तो नाम = named prahasta;
सेनापति: = the commander-in-chief;
नील अम्बुद प्रख्यः = appearing like a dark cloud;
प्राञ्जलि: = joined his palms in salutation;
अब्रवीत् = and spoke;
तदा = then;
वाक्यम् = (the following) words.
A valiant demon by name Prahasta, the commander-in-chief, appearing like a dark cloud, joined his palms in salutation and spoke these words. 1
देव दानव गन्धर्वाः पिशाचपतगौरगाः |
न त्वाम् धर्षयितुम् शक्ताः किम् पुनर् वानरा रणे ||
सर्वे = all;
देव दानव गन्धर्वाः = gods, demons, Gandharvas;
पिशाचपतगौरगाः = devils, birds and serpents;
शक्याः = can be;
धर्षयितुम् = attacked;
रणे = in battle;
किम् पुन: = why to talk about;
मानवौ = two human beings?
“All gods, demons, gandharvas, devils, birds and serpents can be attacked by you in battle. Why to talk about two human beings?” 2
सर्वे प्रमत्ता विश्वस्ता वन्चिताः स्म हनूमता |
न हि मे जीवतो गच्चेज् जीवन् स वन गोचरः ||
सर्वे = all of us;
विश्वस्ता: = in good faith;
प्रमत्ता: = but with negligence;
वन्चितास्मि= were cheated;
हनूमता = by Hanuman;
स = that;
वन गोचरः= monkey;
नगच्छेत् हि = cannot indeed go;
जीवन् = alive;
मे = (while) I;
जीवत: = alive.
“All of us, in good faith but with negligence, were cheated by Hanuman. That monkey cannot go alive, while I am alive.” 3
सर्वाम् सागर पर्यन्ताम् सशैल वन काननाम् |
करोमि अवानराम् भूमिम् आज्ञापयतु माम् भवान् ||
करोमि = I shall make;
सर्वाम् = the entire;
भूमिम् = earth;
सागर पर्यन्ताम् = extending upto the ocean;
सशैल वन काननाम् = along with mountains forests and woods;
अवानराम् = bereft of monkeys;
भवान् = you;
आज्ञापयतु = command;
माम् = me.
“I shall make the entire earth extending upto the ocean, along with mountains forests and woods, bereft of monkeys. You command me.” 4
रक्षाम् चैव विधास्यामि वानराद् रजनी चर |
न आगमिष्यति ते दुह्खम् किंचिद् आत्म अपराधजम् ||
रजनी चर = Oh, Ravana;
विधास्यामि = I shall arrange;
रक्षाम् चैव = for defence also;
वानराद्= from the monkey;
न किंचित् = not a little;
दुह्खम् = trouble; aagamishhyati = will come;
ते = to you;
आत्म अपराधजम् = on account of your guilt (abduction of Seetha).
“Oh, Ravana! I shall arrange for your defence from that monkey. Not a little trouble will come to you on account of your guilt (of abduction of Seetha).” 5
अब्रवीत्तम् सुसम्क्रुद्धो दुर्मुखो नाम राक्षसः |
इदम् न क्षमणीयम् हि सर्वेषाम् नः प्रधर्षणम् ||
राक्षसः = a demon;
दुर्मुखो नाम = by name Durmukha;
सुसम्क्रुद्ध: = being seriously enraged;
अब्रवीत्= spoke;
तम्= to him;
इदम् = this;
प्रधर्षणम् = molestation;
सर्वेषाम् = to all;
नः = of us;
न क्षमणीयम् हि = is indeed not to be tolerated.
A demon by name Durmukha, being seriously enraged, spoke to him as follows: “This humiliation meted out to us by that monkey is indeed not to be tolerated.” 6
अयम् परिभवो भूयः पुरस्य अन्तः पुरस्य च |
राक्षस इन्द्रस्य वानर इन्द्र प्रधर्षणम् ||
अयम् = this;
परिभव: = insult;
पुरस्य = to Lanka City;
अन्तः पुरस्य च = and the palaces;
वानर इन्द्र प्रधर्षणम् = and the attack by Sugreeva, the king of monkeys;
श्रीमत: = of the glorious;
राक्षस इन्द्रस्य = king of demons;
भूयः = is still (outrageous).
“This insult to the city of Lanka and the palaces together with attack by Sugreeva on the glorious Ravana are still outrageous.” 7
अस्मिन् मुहूर्ते हत्वा एको निवर्तिष्यामि वानरान् |
प्रविष्टान् सागरम् भीमम् अम्बरम् वा रसा तलम् ||
गत्वा = proceeding;
अस्मिन् = at this;
मुहूर्ते = moment;
एक: = alone;
निवर्तिष्यामि = I shall destroy;
वानरान् = the monkeys;
प्रविष्टान् = who entered;
सागरम् = either into the ocean;
भीमम् सा तलम् = or into the terrific subterranean region under the earth;
अम्बरम् वा = or into the sky.
“Proceeding at this moment alone, I shall destroy those monkeys, whether they entered the ocean or the subterranean region or the sky.” 8
ततो अब्रवीत् सुसम्क्रुद्धो वज्र दम्ष्ट्रो महाबलः |
प्रगृह्य परिघम् घोरम् मांस शोणित रूपितम् ||
तत: = thereafter;
महाबलः = the very strong;
वज्र दम्ष्ट्र: = Vajradamshtra;
सुसम्क्रुद्ध: = beset with great anger;
प्रगृह्य = took hold of;
घोरम् = a terrific;
परिघम् = iron club;
मांस शोणित रूपितम् = smeared with flesh and blood;
अब्रवीत् = (and) spoke (as follows).
Thereafter the very strong Vajradamshtra, beset with great anger, took hold of a terrific iron club smeared with flesh and blood and spoke (as follows): 9
किम् नो हनुमता कार्यम् कृपणेन तपस्विना |
रामे तिष्ठति दुर्धर्षे सुग्रीवे सह लक्ष्मणे ||
किम् = what;
कार्यम् = work;
न: = for us;
हनुमता = with Hanuman;
कृपणेन = the pitiable;
तपस्विना = and the miserable;
रामे = when Rama;
सलक्ष्मणे = along with Lakshmana;
सुग्रीव अपि = and Sugreeva;
दुर्धर्षे = who are difficult to be conquered;
तिष्ठति = exist?
“What work for us with that pitiable and miserable Hanuma, when Rama along with Lakshmana and Sugreeva who are difficult to be conquered exist?” 10
अद्य रामम् ससुग्रीवम् परिघेण सलक्ष्मणम् |
आगमिष्यामि हत्वा एको विक्षोभ्य हरि वाहिनीम् ||
अद्य = Now;
एक: = alone;
हत्वा = killing;
परिघेण = by this iron club;
रामम् = Rama;
सलक्ष्मणम् = along with Lakshmana;
ससुग्रीवम् = together with Sugreeva;
विक्षोभ्य = and after perturbing;
हरि वाहिनीम्= the army of monkeys;
आगमिष्यामि = I shall come back.
“Now itself, with this iron club, killing Rama, Lakshmana and Sugreeva after perturbing the army of monkeys, I shall come back.” 11
इदम् ममापरम् वाक्यम् शृणु राजन्यदीच्चसि |
उपायकुशलो ह्येव जयेच्चत्रुनतन्द्रितः ||
राजन् = Oh, king;
यदि इच्चसि = if you are willing;
शृणु = hear;
अपरं = moreover;
मम = my;
इदम् वाक्यम् = these words;
उपायकुशलः एव = one who is skilled in stratagem only;
अतन्द्रितः= will be without lassitude;
जयेत् हि = (and) can indeed defeat;
शत्रून् = enemies.
“Oh, king! If you are willing, hear my words further. One who is skilled in a stratagem alone will be without lassitude and can indeed defeat the enemies.” 12
कामरूपधराः शूराः सुभीमा भीमदर्शनाः |
राक्षसा वा सहस्राणि राक्षसाधिप निश्चिताः ||
काकुत्थ्समुपसम्गम्य बिभ्रतो मानुषम् वपुः |
सर्वे ह्यसम्भ्रमा भूत्वा ब्रुवन्तु रघुसत्तमम् ||
राक्षसाधिप = O, king of demons!
सहस्राणि = thousands of;
राक्षसा: = demons;
कामरूपधराः = able to change their form at will;
शूराः = courageous;
सुभीमा: = appalling;
भीमदर्शनाः = terrifying to look at;
निश्चिताः = and firm (in their purpose);
बिभ्रताः = can wear;
मानुषम् = human;
वपुः = body;
उपसम्गम्य= approach;
काकुत्सं = Rama;
असम्भ्रमाः = without embarrassment;
सर्वे = and all;
ब्रुवन्तु = speak;
रघुसत्तमम् = to Rama (as follows).
O, king of demons! Thousands of demons able to change their form at will courageaous appalling terrifying to look at and firm (in their purpose) can wear human body approach Rama without embarrassment and all speak to Rama (as follows). 13
प्रेषिता भरतेनैव भ्रात्रा तव यवीयसा |
स हि सेनाम् समुत्थाप्य क्षिप्रमेवोपयास्यति ||
प्रेषिता = we have been sent;
भरतेनैव = by Bharata;
तव = your;
यवीयसा = younger;
भ्रात्रा = brother;
स: = he;
समुत्थाप्य = summoning;
सेनाम् = his forces;
क्षिप्रमेव = will surely soon;
उपयास्यति = come here.
“We have been despatched by Bharata, your younger brother. He is summoning his forces and will surely come here soon.” 14
ततो वयमितस्तुर्णम् शूलशक्तिगदाधराः |
चापबाणासिहस्तश्च त्वरितास्तत्र यामहे ||
तत: = thereafter;
वयम् = we;
तुर्णम् = quickly;
शूलशक्तिगदाधराः = carrying spikes, javelins and maces;
चापबाणासिहस्तश्च = with arrows and swords in hand;
यामहे = will go;
तत्र= there;
इतः = from here;
त्वरिता: = soon.”
“Carrying spikes, javelins and maces together with arrows and swords in hand, we will quickly go there from here soon.” 15
आकाशे गणशः स्थित्वा हत्वा ताम् हरिवाहिनीम् |
अश्मशस्त्रमहावृष्ट्वा प्रापयाम् यमक्षयम् ||
स्थित्वा = standing;
गणशः = as groups;
आकाशे = in the sky;
हत्वा = beating;
ताम् = that;
हरिवाहिनीम् = army of monkeys;
अश्मशस्त्रमहावृष्ट्वा = with a mighty hail of stones and missiles;
प्रापयाम् = we should send them);
यमक्षयम् = to the world of Death.
“Standing as groups in the sky and beating that army of monkeys with a mighty hail of stones and missiles, we should send them to the world of Death.” 16
एवम् चेदुपसर्पेतामनयम् रामलक्ष्मणौ |
अवश्यमपनीतेन जहतामेव जीवितम् ||
रामलक्ष्मणौ = (If) Rama and Lakshmana;
उपसर्पेताम् यदि = approach softly into our trap;
एवम् = thus;
जहतामेव = they will just abandon;
जीवितम् = the life;
अवश्यमेव = surely;
अपनीतेन= as they are taken away (by the trap)
“If Rama and Lakshmana thus approach softly into our trap they will surely abandon their lives as they are taken away by the trap.” 17
कौम्भकर्णिस् ततो वीरो निकुम्भो नाम वीर्यवान् |
अब्रवीत् परम कुर्द्धो रावणम् लोक रावणम् ||
तत: = thereafter;
कुम्भकर्णिः = Kumbhakarna’s sons;
निकुम्भो नाम = by name Nikumbha;
वीर: = strong;
वीर्यवान् = and powerful;
परम कुर्द्ध: = became very angry;
अब्रवीत् = and spoke;
रावणम् = to Ravana;
लोक रावणम् = who made people cry.
Thereafter Kumbhakarna’s son, by name Nikumbha, strong and powerful, became very angry and spoke (as follows) to Ravana, who made people cry. 18
सर्वे भवन्तस् तिष्ठन्तु महाराजेन सम्गताः |
अहम् एको हनिष्यामि राघवम् सह लक्ष्मणम् ||
सुग्रीवम् सहनूमन्तम् सर्वांश्चैवात्र वानरान् |
सर्वे= all;
भवन्त: = of you;
तिष्ठन्तु = stay;
सम्गताः = along with;
महाराजेन = the king;
अहम् = I;
एक: = alone;
हनिष्यामि = will kill;
अत्र = there;
राघवम् = Rama;
सह लक्ष्मणम्= along with Lakshman;
सुग्रीवम् = Sugreeva;
सहनूमन्तम् = along with Hanuman;
सर्वांन् = all;
वानरान् श्चैव= the monkeys too.”
All of you stay along with the king. I alone will kill there, Rama along with Lakshman, Sugreeva along with Hanuma and all the monkeys also. 19
ततो वज्रहनुर्नाम राक्षसः पर्वतोपमः ||
क्रुद्धः परिलिहन् वक्त्रम् जिह्वया वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् |
तत: = then;
राक्षसः = a demon;
वज्रहनुर्नाम = by name Vajrahanu;
पर्वतोपमन= who was resembling a mountain;
क्रुद्धः = becoming enraged;
परिलिहन् = licking;
श्रीक्कां= the corners of his mouth;
जिह्वया = with his tongue;
अब्रवीत् = spoke;
वाक्यम् = those words.
Then, a demon by name Vajrahanu who was resembling a mountain, becoming enraged and licking the corners of his mouth with his tongue, spoke as follows: 20
स्वैरम् कुर्वन्तु कार्याणि भवन्तो विगत ज्वराः ||
एको अहम् भक्षयिष्यामि तान् सर्वान् हरि यूथपान् |
स्वस्थाः क्रीडन्तु निश्चिन्ताः पिबन्तु मधु वारुणीम् ||
भवन्त: = you;
कुर्वन्तु = do;
कर्माणि = (your) occupations;
स्वैरम् = freely;
विगत ज्वराः = redeemed of mental pain;
क्रीडन्तु = play;
स्वस्थाः = comfortably;
पिबन्तु = (and) drink;
वारुणीम् मधु = spirituous liquor;
निश्चिन्ताः = without worry;
अहम् = I;
एक: = alone;
भक्षयिष्यामि = will devour;
सर्वाम्= the entire;
हरिवाहिनीं = army of monkeys.
“You do your occupations freely redeemed of mental pain, play comfortably and drink spirituous liquor without any worry. I alone will devour the entire army of monkeys.” 21
अहम् एको हनिष्यामि सुग्रीवम् सह लक्ष्मणम् |
स अन्गदम् च हनूमन्तम् रामम् च रण कुन्जरम् ||
अत्र = at this time;
अहम् = I;
एक: = alone;
हनिष्यामि = will kill;
सुग्रीवम् = Sugreeva;
सह लक्ष्मणम् = along with Lakshmana;
हनूमन्तम् = Hanuma;
स अन्गदम् = along with Angada;
सर्वान्= (and) all;
वानर अम्सेःच = monkeys.”
At this time I alone will kill Sugreeva along with Lakshmana Hanuma along with Angada and all monkeys. 22
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्ध काण्डे नवमः सर्गः
Thus completes 9th Chapter of Yuddha Kanda of the glorious Ramayana of Valmiki, the work of a sage and the oldest epic.
